My name is Mathew Mitchell, 30 from the West Midlands, UK. Over the last few years I’ve got more and more into cycling, from the first innocent Sportive events to Audaxes, Go-Races and finally proper British Cycling racing.
I did my first Sportive in 2010, coming in the bottom 10% or so of a 100 mile event around Stratford upon Avon, the next event a mere 6 weeks later saw me end up in the bottom 30%, improvement!
2011 and 2012 were a sort of hiatus, still riding but not really with a purpose other than a couple of goes at the Dunwich Dynamo.
2013 was the first year of purposeful structured cycling. It started with signing up to the Paris-Roubaix Challenge and the training rides to prepare. Once this was completed I realised I found cycling on my own all the time a little bit boring and joined a local club (Stratford CC). The improvement of proper riding with decent riders has been obvious with a 5th in a Sportive in July, followed by the first ‘win’ in September.
2014 saw a few attempts at things, bit of racing and a bit of audaxing – first few BC points and the first 200km ride completed.
2015 had high hopes, but I sort of just ticked along with the odd audax. Did manage to build and restore an antique tandem in time to ride the Dunwich Dynamo on it in July however.
2016 saw me get back in the swing of things, reaching my target of over 10,000km for the year, the Dunwich Dynamo on a tandem, Liege-Bastogne-Liege Sportive, cycling from Brussels to Cologne and the regular list of reliability rides and sportives.
2017 will see me complete E3 Harelbeke, the 230km Dragon Ride and Dunwich Dynamo. I’m also going to bite the bug and start time-trialling for the first time.
