Mitchelton-SCOTT climbers safely through stage two sprint in Vuelta Burgos

Wed 29 Jul 2020

Mitchelton-SCOTT riders made it safely through today’s flat sprint stage on day two of Vuelta Burgos, with Colombian climber Esteban Chaves maintaining a top-10 position in the overall general classification.

With a hard summit finish test coming tomorrow, the squad conserved energy throughout the day, keeping themselves out of trouble with Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) crowned the stage winner.

Breakaway animates
Like yesterday, a small group successfully broke away in the opening kilometres reaching an advantage of four-minutes after 15kilometres of racing. The rest of the stage remained much the same with the five leader’s hovering between four and five minutes out front.

Predicted sprint
Sprint teams such as Bora-Hansgrohe sent riders to the head of the peloton to gradually reel-in the escapees, finally doing so with just 15kilometres remaining.

As expected, the flat stage concluded with a rapid bunch sprint with Gaviria launching and holding on for the stage victory.

Tomorrow the riders face a 7.8km climb up to the summit finish in Picón Blanco with the general classification expected to shake up.

Alex Edmondson
“Today was a long and hot old day. It was pretty chilled all day until the last 20kilometres as the breakaway was ahead.

“The boys did a great job keeping Esteban and myself up at the front coming into the finish. I tried to surf the bunch, but it was a bit of a mad downhill run-in and I got a bit lost in the final.

“I had good sensations though and now we look towards the next final three stages with Esteban stilI in a good spot in the GC.

“It’s really good to be back racing!”
